Sometimes in life things happen through the sheer energy and determination of an individual who wants to make a difference. I met Frances Molloy many years ago when she was exploring the possibility of setting up a project to raise awareness of the spiritual needs of older people, but especially those with dementia. I have hugely admired her determination and faith. The project, now well established, is a registered charity and provides one to one support and visiting teams and services in care homes. It has also developed a unique interest and concern for offering support for carers.

They have just published a DVD which provides an overview of this area. It is well produced, easy to engage with and very stimulating. Frances introduces the subject and there is a helpful and insightful interview with a full time carer. Spiritual care, the health perspective, the social care perspective are all dealt with by experienced professionals in these areas. There are final contributions from a pastoral lay visitor who looks at ministry from a lay perspective and some general theological reflections from an Anglican priest. All of the talks are reflective, insightful and refreshingly interesting.

The DVD costs £15.00 which includes postage and packaging and there are concessions for anyone or group that cannot afford this amount. The DVD would certainly be particularly helpful and interesting for those who wish to introduce this subject to a group and I shall certainly be testing it out on some of my colleagues and church members here in Temple Balsall.

In a world of so many words it is good to have this subject explored through this particular medium. The people and their experience are an excellent starting point for further exploration about the theory and practice of spiritual care.
